RAM Trucks Are Onto Something Big

RAM trucks have been on the move throughout America with a strong history of excellence, so it’s no surprise they’ve been hard at work designing more groundbreaking pickup truck features. RAM recently received a patent to integrate a fold-out ramp into the bed of a pickup truck. The patent titled, “Adjustable Loading Ramp System for a Vehicle”, is based on a system of two slide-out ramps that stow into the floor of a truck bed and lock into channels at the end of a folded-down tailgate. The ramp system also features sliders so drivers can adjust the width of the ramps to fit the vehicle being loaded in or out. Sounds pretty easy and convenient, right?
Another Chrysler patent was filed last year that would give RAM trucks the power to maximize tailgate functionality better than any other truck. The two-way split-door tailgate hinges from the bottom or the side, giving the tailgate the ability to independently pivot at the bed or swing outward.
The all-new split-door design is designed with L-frame brackets on both sides, along with a pair of electromechanical locks attached to the box that allow horizontal or vertical movement. With a press of a button on the tailgate, the L-frame detaches from the box and that part of the door falls. Choose the second button and the L-frame will lock, so the same door swings out on a pair of hinges. When both buttons are pressed on the left and right halves, a locking pin engages the two doors to swing down together, just like a standard tailgate. All-in-all, this multi-functional tailgate can be used in up to eight combinations. Need we say more about this super cool design?
Hold up–don’t rush over to the dealership yet. Both the split-door tailgate and adjustable loading ramp system are still in the patent phase, so RAM has a little ways to go should these awesome features find their way to production.
