Whether you’ve had your car for four months, four years, or four decades, you’re probably wondering whether — and when — it needs a tune-up. The short answer: it doesn’t, exactly. But that doesn’t mean you’re off the hook. You’ll still need to maintain your vehicle. It used to be that your car, truck, or SUV could come in for a tune-up on a set schedule and have its fluids checked and changed, its spark plugs and wires swapped out, and other systems (like the belts, tires, and lights) checked. But as cars have transitioned from relatively simple mechanical engines to fuel-injected engines, and as each part and system has gotten more complex, the picture has changed somewhat. In short, not everything needs to be done at the same time, and some parts now last longer — much longer, in fact — than others.
So if you’re not getting a tune-up, what should you be doing? These days, each vehicle is a unique combination of parts and systems, each with its own maintenance schedule. Your Jeep Cherokee won’t need the same things at the same times as your neighbor’s Dodge Challenger. Your vehicle’s owner’s manual can help in this regard, since it’ll tell you what needs to be done and when. There are still times when it helps to give your vehicle a thorough once-over.
